Nike is cutting 2% of its current workforce, or more than 1,500 jobs, as part of a broader restructuring, the company said late Thursday. Cuts in Nike's EMEA region will be on a different timeline based on local labor laws, the company said. In December, Nike unveiled a broad restructuring plan to cut costs by about $2 billion over the next three years. Shortly before the restructuring was announced, The Oregonian reported that Nike had been quietly laying off employees over the past several weeks and had signaled that it was planning for a broader restructuring. It's not clear how many jobs in total Nike has cut since December.

After a tepid year in the IPO market, investors are hopeful 2024 will bring about a return to form. But the IPO market cratered in 2022 after the Federal Reserve's aggressive rate hiking campaign collapsed investor demand for growth stocks. But happier days could be ahead for the IPO market in 2024. According to Linqto's 2024 IPO Sentiment Survey released Thursday, only a little more than half, 52%, of 2,500 traders polled are anticipating a significant recovery in the IPO market this year, suggesting "cautious optimism" ahead. "There's a lot more optimism for the IPO market," said Akshata Bailkeri, head of research at EquityZen, a platform for pre-IPO activity.

Mitchell & Ness, the lifestyle clothing brand known for its throwback and vintage jerseys and apparel that was acquired by Fanatics last year, has hired Nike executive Eli Kumekpor as its new CEO. Kumekpor, who most recently served as the global vice president and general manager of Jordan Brand's men's business, will replace former CEO Kevin Wulff, who joined Fanatics when Mitchell & Ness was acquired and is now retiring. Established in 1904 in Philadelphia, Mitchell & Ness makes and sells vintage jerseys and apparel collections for nearly every major sports league. "How do you take the old and make it new and fresh again," he said, referencing some of the things that Jordan Brand has done around its extensive catalog of beloved sneakers. "Nostalgia means a lot of different things to different consumer groups, so we want to make sure we're keeping the brand premium."

Nike's stock tumbled Wednesday for the 10th day in a row after Foot Locker reported dismal quarterly results and consumers continue to pull back from the footwear sector. "This became much more evident through the second quarter including a weaker start to back to school. The store traffic and conversion challenges we began to see in late Q1 persisted through the second quarter as our customer remained cautious with their discretionary dollars," she said. China's uneven recovery could also be weighing on Nike's stock. However, it's unclear if that growth is continuing and what the results will look like when Nike next reports earnings.

Once-coveted Air Jordans and Air Maxes are now sitting on shelves, with some retro Jordans selling below retail on the secondary market. "Air Max is Becoming Air Min," reads the headline of a report this week from Williams Trading analyst Sam Poser, who downgraded Nike's stock to sell. While numerous analysts remain bullish on Nike, Poser is among those who say Nike needs to ramp up innovation. At its 2017 investor day, Nike announced the Air Max 270. "Nike has lost many senior people throughout the entire company with, now necessary, historical institutional knowledge of Nike," Poser wrote.
Ron DeSantis and Disney , Nike CEO John Donahoe said it's important for corporations to choose their battles, but fight for the values integral to their brands. In response, Donahoe said companies don't need to weigh in on every political kerfuffle but should be a loud voice when their brand's values are under attack. "I think Bob's doing a great job at this," Donahoe said of Disney CEO Bob Iger. "If it's core to who you are and your values, then no, you stand up for your values," he said. "In addition, our core consumer for the Nike brand, the Jordan Brand, the converse brand, are urban Black and brown communities — that's where sneaker culture started," Donahoe explained.
Nike CEO John Donahoe said Tuesday that Disney CEO Bob Iger is "doing a great job." "I think Bob's doing a great job at this," Donahoe said of Iger. Donahoe's remarks are the latest chapter in a yearlong feud that started in early 2022 when then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek objected to the DeSantis administration's "Don't Say Gay" bill. Iger, who returned as Disney CEO in November, has continued to battle with DeSantis. Disney and Nike have long supported each other and shared connective tissue.

Nike finished its fiscal 2022 year with 344 company stores, including 209 factory stores and 87 Converse stores. In its latest annual report, Nike said footwear revenues grew 9%, driven by both Jordan Brand and men's sales last year.

But many sneakerheads could not enter a draw for the wider release on the SNKRS app because of app crashes or frozen screens. Regardless of the movie's spin on events, the Jordan deal was a pivotal moment for Nike.
StockX says it rejected $100 million worth of counterfeit products from resellers in 2022. The resale marketplace said in its annual report that it recorded record revenues in 2022. Overall, the resale platform turned away over 330,000 fake items shipped by sellers for verification last year, according to its latest annual marketplace report. StockX currently inspects over 1 million items a month at its 13 authentication centers worldwide. Nike, Jordan Brand, Adidas, New Balance, and Converse once again were the top selling sneaker brands on the platform.
Sneakerheads are replacing Yeezys with Crocs

Crocs, New Balance, and Puma are some brands benefiting from Adidas Yeezys no longer being released. Crocs, New Balance, and Puma accounted for four "high-heat" sneaker drops in December, Nikic estimates. The Crocs brand has become synonymous with comfort, like Yeezy, and has previously released successful collaborations with both Bad Bunny and designer Salehe Bembury. "Smaller brands such as Puma, New Balance, and Crocs all generated some sneakerhead 'buzz,' likely aided by the lack of Yeezy, which freed up wallet share among sneakerheads," he said. Pictures of the first possible sneaker released without Ye have surfaced online.
Nike's Jordan brand on Tuesday unveiled a line of slip-on sneakers for kids. The new Jordan line, called the 23/7, is designed for easy entry and all-day use. In 2015, Nike released the FlyEase, a slip-on shoe. Nike's an investor in Kizik, a Utah company that makes slip-on sneakers and licenses its technology. "Slip-on sneakers are ready to make a comeback," according to a recent post about sneaker trends on Glam, a website covering beauty, lifestyle, and fashion.
